LIFE Victoria: Metaphysical Journeys

Monday 2 November - 19:00

Anne Schwanewilms’ debut is one of the most eagerly awaited at LIFE Victoria. This German-born soprano stands out in the female roles created by Richard Strauss—her last appearance in Barcelona was as Arabella at the Liceu—but also in Wagnerian roles such as Elsa (Lohengrin) and Elisabeth (Tannhäuser), as well as other works such as Dialogue des Carmélites, Wozzeck and Otello.

Inspired by the drama of opera, the soprano returns to Barcelona in a programme divided into four parts, four journeys of the soul that review some of its leading recital composers.

In the first part, Himmelfahrt (Ascension), she will perform ethereal Lieder such as Mahler’s Wo die Trompeten blasen and Debussy’s L’invitation au voyage, from which the 2020 edition takes its name. Three Songs of Ophelia by Strauss, her leading composer, comprise the second part dedicated to Reisen in den Irrsinn (Journeys to Madness), while Debussy’s Prose lyriques will represent the Traumreisen (Dream Journeys). To conclude, Wolf’s Lieder will bring the magic to close this long-awaited recital with the final part, Phantasiereisen (Journeys to Fantasy).
